IRS and county tax offices in Abilene
Before you drive anywhere, it helps to know which office can actually fix your problem. Here is what each one does.
The IRS Taxpayer Assistance Center
IRS walk-in offices, called Taxpayer Assistance Centers, see people by appointment. The IRS local-office page explains how to find the nearest center and book a visit [1]. The Abilene Taxpayer Assistance Center is listed at 500 Chestnut St, #109, Abilene, TX 79602 [2]. Confirm the current Abilene-area office and hours in the locator before going [3].
A TAC can verify identity, take payments and print transcripts. It does not negotiate settlements or decide hardship requests. Transcripts are also available online through Get Transcript [4], and most payment plans can be set up online [5].
Bring photo ID, the IRS letter that prompted the visit and any deadlines written down. If the letter asks you to verify your identity, it lists the documents you need.
Many visits can be avoided. The phone number on your notice reaches the unit that holds your account, and it can usually put a short hold on collection while you gather documents. Ask for the name of the person you spoke with and the date, and keep a written log. If you are sending documents, use a trackable method and keep copies of everything.
Taylor County records and property tax
The Taylor County Clerk keeps the official public records, including any notice of federal tax lien against real estate. The office is at 300 Oak Street, Suite 100, Abilene, TX 79602 [6].
Taylor Central Appraisal District values property [7], and Taylor County and the City of Abilene are among the taxing units [8][9]. Business owners can find local business resources through the Abilene Chamber of Commerce [10]. The County Clerk's fee schedule notes that trustee and foreclosure sales are held on the first Tuesday of each month in the southeast foyer of the courthouse at 300 Oak Street [11].
Delinquent property tax carries 6% penalty in the first month and 12% by July 1, plus 1% interest a month [12]. Older and disabled homeowners can defer collection on a residence homestead by filing with the appraisal district [12].
If you are selling or refinancing, the title company will search the Clerk's records for liens and the tax office for unpaid property tax. Getting both answers yourself first avoids a surprise at closing.
When normal channels have not worked
The Taxpayer Advocate Service helps when an IRS problem is causing financial hardship or has not been fixed through normal channels. Contact the local TAS office or file Form 911 [13].
Low Income Taxpayer Clinics represent eligible taxpayers for free or a small fee. The 2026 IRS list shows Texas clinics including Legal Aid of NorthWest Texas and the Texas A&M Tax Dispute Resolution Clinic in Fort Worth, Texas Tech in Lubbock, and clinics in Houston, San Antonio and Addison [14][15].
VITA sites prepare returns for free for people who generally make about $70,244 or less [16][17].
A practical order of operations
Most problems start with a letter. Notices in the CP series are computer-generated balance-due or levy-warning letters; LT letters and Letter 1058 come from the collection function and carry hearing rights. The letter number is in the top or bottom right corner, and the IRS publishes an explanation page for most of them [18][19].
Read the notice and note the deadline. Pull your transcripts. Check whether you can set up a plan online. If the letter is a final notice of intent to levy, note the 30-day hearing deadline [20].
If that still leaves questions, call. The first call is free, and you get a real professional instead of a national call center.
